The ten commandments have never been used as a justification for ending slavery. The bible itself was used as justification for slavery right up until the Civil War. In fact, there is more than one version of the ten commandments in the bible, and they are different. There are many other commandments in the old testament that we nowadays utterly ignore. If you examine them as they were originally intended to be understood, you will find the meaning is very different from what many people interpret them to mean nowadays. For other of god's commandments, it must be that it is a matter of inconvenience to bother to follow them. Do you wear blended fabrics? Why? god has forbidden this! In any case, it is necessary to reinterpet whatever part of the bible you happen to be reading in order to give it the meaning you wish it had.
